Ali Blogs: Yay – the recipe you’ve all been waiting for!
So when Tara Cain set the ‘ugly’ project last week, I showed you all the remnants of my boys’ fave dish – Spinach Dahl, and then lots of you . . . asked me for the recipe (which suprised me, considering the state of the pan!)
So here it is, (courtesy of the lovely Rose Eliot) – pink post it note, circa 2003, with note to Mother-in-Law not to use the chilli!
2 tablespoons groundnut oil
2 onions – finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
2 tsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp ground turmeric
3-4 cardamon pods
100g red lentils
450g spinach, washed and tough stems removed.
Heat the oil, add onions cook gently, covered for 10 mins.
Add garlic, cumin, turmeric. Crush the cardamon pods, and bung them in. Stir for a couple of mins, then add the lentils and 450ml water. Boil, then cover and simmer for half an hour.
Then pop the spinach in a dry pan and wilt (about 5 mins) Drain, and add to the lentils, then blend for weeny babies, or fussy boys who think they don’t like spinach leaves.
Tell me how easy THAT is brenda, pippa D, julia B, barbara and redtedart I want to know how you get on!

Hurrah! Sounds fab! We will def have to have a go!!!! mx x
Sounds delicious, will make it when I come back x
Well, I loved it, sadly my heathen children not so much. It was very easy and yummy though and I will make it again. When they’re at school and I can scoff the lot myself without feeling guiltly about them not having anything to eat!
bsouth, ha ha, I think they either love it or hate it; my sis (and now my SAHD) have this saying that a child has to try something TEN times before they are truly allowed to take the dish off their wish list, so persevere, mine are always bribed by the nan bread from the local Indian corner shop!

Gorgeous! are your kids veggie ? my two have been form birth x
Becky, they were veggie(quarian) to start with (as I am), my eldest certainly until he was 4; then SAHD and I decided we would introduce organic meat – I think the eldest is more like me, where as my 5yo is hilariously VERY carnivourous! x
